Near the village of De Kiel, the original Zevenmarkensteen was for a long time located. This was a boundary stone that marked the point where seven traditional farmers' marks came together. A farmer's mark was a medieval form of cooperation between a number of free farmers. They used common land and also had a duty to maintain it.
The original marken stone has unfortunately disappeared, but a modern version was reinstalled in the same place in 2004. On it you can now read the names of the seven towns of Westdorp, Ees, Odoorn, Sleen, Zweeloo, Westerbork and Rolde.
