Dolmen Big Five cycle route
Emmen, Borger, Rolde
Have you spotted the Big Five yet? This is possible, simply, in Drenthe! Although Drenthe cannot really be called ‘simply’. The rich history and beautiful nature make a visit to this area more than worthwhile. This cycle route offers you the opportunity to visit the five largest of Drenthe's fifty-two dolmens. One of them is really the largest in the Netherlands: D27 is located in Borger and is almost twenty-three metres long.
Besides visiting the dolmens, you can also learn more about the history of this area along the way. At the Hunebed Centre in Borger, you will discover all about the origins of these prehistoric burial monuments and how people lived at that time. All this in a fun and interactive way.
Besides the Big Five dolmens, you will come across many more smaller dolmens during your route, often located in the middle of beautiful nature. Worth a closer look for that reason alone.
Along the way, you will come across a number of catering establishments to take a break. A visit to The Ceramic Garden is recommended!
If the route is now just a bit too long for you, you can book an overnight stay along the way and spread the kilometres over several days. You can also cut a bit off, of course, but then you won't be able to tick off all five....
