The area that now lies between Woudenberg and Maarsbergen used to be a large swamp. Around 1130, it was decided that this area should become habitable. The monks of Leusden therefore built a dike right through the area. Later, the dike was also used as a road.
In the twentieth century, the dike fell into disrepair. As a result, it was decided to restore it. The disappeared part was rebuilt, vegetation returned and a cycle path. Therefore, it is now possible again to ride from the busy road onto the historic and beautifully winding path. Along the path, signs tell more about the history of Monnickendijk.
