Because of the Hanseatic League, the city of Zutphen flourished. This led to the old city and the Nieuwstad being merged. The old city already had walls, and the Nieuwstad probably did as well, which is why people wanted to wall off the existing walls to form a single entity. This required two water gates: one where the river Berkel entered the city and one where the river left the city again. Remnants of the first water gate remain and form this impressive ruin.
