On top of the Kuiperberg, just outside Ootmarsum, you will also find - besides a water tower and a Jewish cemetery - this special Orientation Table. It is a national monument that was placed in 1926 after the ANWB's Federation Days. Engraved in the large bluestone square slab on top are the names of places and buildings you should be able to see from that vantage point, such as Enschede, Oldenzaal and even the castle in the German town of Bentheim.
Unfortunately, the view is a little less far these days because there are trees in the way on several sides. However, from the Orientation Table you can see the well-known Twente coulisse landscape full of rolling ash trees, woods and hedgerows very nicely. This layering was the inspiration for many paintings by artist Ton Schulten.
