Cycle route Rivers and Estates
Pannerden, Tolkamer, Doornenburg
Gelderland's river region, with places like Aerdt, Pannerden, Gendt, Herwen, Lobith, and Doornenburg, tells a story of continuous interaction with water. This region, shaped and reshaped by the power of rivers, has a history of fighting floods, but also of exploiting the fertile soil left behind by water.
The rivers in this area have changed their course over the centuries, forcing local communities to adapt and innovate. Dykes broke and then had to be repaired or rebuilt, testifying to a constant battle against water. At the same time, the many floods made the land fertile, providing the basis for the fruit farms that are now a major part of the local economy.
Amid these watery challenges, castles and estates stand as silent witnesses of the past. Huis Aerdt, the historic residential tower of Poelwijk in Gendt, and the imposing Doornenburg Castle, each with their own story of surviving and adapting to the whims of nature.
