Pannerden, Tolkamer, Doornenburg
Gelderland's river region, with places like Aerdt, Pannerden, Gendt, Herwen, Lobith, and Doornenburg, tells a story of continuous interaction with water. This region, shaped and reshaped by the power of rivers, has a history of fighting floods, but also of exploiting the fertile soil left behind by water. The rivers in this area have changed their course over the centuries, forcing local communities to adapt and innovate. Dykes broke and then had to be repaired or rebuilt, testifying to a constant battle against water. At the same time, the many floods made the land fertile, providing the basis for the fruit farms that are now a major part of the local economy. Amid these watery challenges, castles and estates stand as silent witnesses of the past. Huis Aerdt, the historic residential tower of Poelwijk in Gendt, and the imposing Doornenburg Castle, each with their own story of surviving and adapting to the whims of nature. During this Cycle route, you can especially enjoy all this water, the beautiful floodplains and the interesting Pit stops on the route. From April to September, it is possible to extend your route to the other side of the Rhine. You then take the ferry to Millingen aan de Rijn at junction 81 and cycle via junctions 94, 72 and 71 to the next ferry from Millingerwaard to Doornenburg. Pick up the last part of the route by cycling towards 85 at node 79. From October to April, these ferries do not sail and you cycle the route from 81 to 89 and so back via 88, you can then pick up the route again at node 79.
