The Zeeuws Museum is located in the historic centre of Middelburg. In the former abbey, you will discover the unexpected sides of Zeeland: from archaeological finds and world-famous tapestries to regional costumes, porcelain and exotic objects which Zeelanders brought back from faraway travels. The diverse collections and exhibitions offer surprising perspectives on the culture and history of the province.
The tapestries in the museum depict several important battles in Zeeland's waters during the Eighty Years' War. Between 1593 and 1604, the States of Zeeland gave several commissions to Hendrik Cornelisz. Vroom, the founder of Dutch marine painting.
Two tapestries depict the Siege of Veere. The battle fought near Veere between May 6 and 18, 1572, after Alva's troops docked at Vrouwenpolder near Breezand.
The Zeeland Museum is located in the Abbey of Middelburg. Here stayed Bishop Nicolaas de Castro, who had found safe refuge in the abbey within the city. Westhove Castle, destroyed by the Beggars, was the bishop's residence.
