The passage of Wijchen and its castle forms the absolute highlight on day two of the Nijmegen Four-Day Walk, also known as Pink Wednesday.
The first Wijchen Castle is believed to date from the mid-14th century, but after that it was destroyed and rebuilt at least once. The new castle was commissioned by Mr Van Batenburg and was completed by the early seventeenth century.
After a chimney fire in 1906, the castle was completely burnt out, with only the walls still standing. The Nijmegen architect F.A. Ludwig completed the complete restoration in 1908 and peace has since returned there.
The castle is now owned by the municipality of Wijchen, which has established the town hall there. But it is also a museum, which is worth visiting to find out much more about the history of this beautiful castle.
Near the castle, halfway through the second stage of the Nijmegen Four-Day Walk, a true popular festival erupts. In Wijchen, people traditionally stand in rows thick to cheer on the walkers. The party combined with the beautifully decorated city centre and the view of the old castle is unforgettable for many walkers. In addition, the passage through the village is supportive for the last part of the day.
