In the middle of the Hitzum meadows lies an old orchard where grey herons nest high up in the trees. To provide the colony with additional nesting sites, oak, ash, elm and willow trees have been planted. This has been successful, as the colony has now expanded. The original fruit trees are still there and, together with the new plantings, form a varied landscape.
