Franeker, Bolsward, Wommels

Franeker and Bolsward are two interesting stops on this Cycle route through Friesland. Franeker is known for the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the oldest working planetarium in the world. The city has a compact, historic city centre with canals and monumental buildings. From Franeker, the route takes you along quiet roads and open fields towards Bolsward. This Elfsteden town has an impressive 17th-century town hall and the Broerekerk church, of which only the walls are still standing and which now has a special roof.

Besides the city's variety, nature also comes into play with the Flietsterbosk and the Filenspolder. The Flietsterbosk is a young forest area with varied vegetation and quiet cycle paths. Here you can see various bird species and take a break in a natural environment. The route continues to the Filenspolder, a typical Frisian peat meadow area. This open landscape, criss-crossed by ditches and grass paths, gives a good idea of traditional Frisian farmland.

The historic towns give a glimpse of Frisian heritage, while the surrounding nature reserves provide a peaceful break. That makes this route ‘something for everyone’.
