Following on from the museum in the memorial centre is the Westerbork National Monument, on the vast grounds where the transit camp used to stand. The monument consists of a ninety-metre-long railway track. Curled and carved at the end, it is meant to express the despair of the war situation. There are annual commemorations at the rails on 4 May.
Further along are the 102,000 stones. These refer to the number of prisoners deported from the camp to concentration and extermination camps. The stones give a fierce impression of the scale on which people were deported in World War II. Likewise, the camp commander's almost intact residence can still be found on the site. This is under a glass dome.
Both the stones and the rails are the silent, symbolic references to the fierce way in which countless people were driven to their deaths in World War II.
