The oldest part of Warehouse Libau, one of the oldest buildings in Groningen, was built around 1300. The building had a live-work function: the ground floor (today's basement) and the living hall above it were occupied. In the 17th century, a beer brewery was located here. Many breweries were located along the Hoge der Aa because of the quality of the Aa's water. After that, the building was mainly used by grain merchants. Even after the Hanseatic era, there was a lot of (grain) trade with the Baltic region from Groningen. In 1882, the rear of the building was replaced by a new warehouse. After World War II, there was no more investment in the building and it fell into disrepair. In 1994, the Provincial Beauty Commission bought the property and subsequently named itself after it. Since 2002, it has also been the address of the Monumentenwacht Groningen.
