The present Verwolde House, whose name refers to its wooded surroundings, was built in 1776 as a mansion on the site of a medieval predecessor. At the beginning of the 16th century, the house was almost completely destroyed during a siege. According to the report of that event, Verwolde was protected by no fewer than three moats. Yet that could not prevent a bad outcome. A new castle was built, but this too was destroyed.
