The Gelderland Castles Route | Achterhoek
Lochem, Laren, Barchem
The province of Gelderland is characterised by beautiful nature, numerous castles and their estates. Organisation Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen proudly cares for many of these castles, but only seven are open to the public. Get to know the public castles in five beautiful cycle routes through the landscape of Gelderland. This stage takes you through the Achterhoek region, where you will get to know the castles and estates around Lochem.
During the fifth part of De Geldersche Kasteelenroute, you will cycle over the Lochemse Berg, a nature reserve with rolling landscape and beautiful trees. These include Scots pines and majestic beeches. Laren is home to Huis Verwolde. The house is so named thanks to its wooded surroundings. This is not the first property built here; previous castles were unfortunately destroyed. The current building was created in 1776. Step inside and learn about the castle's history or browse past all kinds of delicacies from the region.
The Achterhoek countryside is beautiful to cycle through. As extra cherries on the cake, on this route you will also come across the 17th-century Huis Ampsen and the stately 18th-century Havezate Westerflier. Get on your bike and enjoy this beautiful and interesting 43 kilometres!
