The Fort at the Buursteeg is situated close to the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre. It was constructed in 1786 and is one of the largest and most important defence works in the Grebbelinie. It could house hundreds of soldiers at a time. The fort was besieged during the war against the French in 1794-1795 and was in the frontline in 1940.
In addition to being a place of siege, the fortress was also used for water defence. As early as the 16th century, a system of dams, sluices and forts was used to make smart use of the water in the Gelderse Vallei. In this way, the water was no longer a nuisance, but a natural extra defence.
Now, the fort is a monument and a TOP (Tourist Transfer Point). With a car park, restaurant and many opportunities for cycling and walking, this is an ideal starting point for your route.
