Tjaskers are small windmills developed in Friesland. In the past, they were used by peat cutters to pump water away, but today they are mainly used to keep reed beds wet. This is necessary because without additional water, reed beds can eventually dry out and disappear. There are still a large number of tjaskers in and around the Weerribben.
Near this tjasker are the Forestry Commission's De Weerribben visitor centre and recreation centre De Kluft, which includes a café-restaurant.
