Cycle Route Dé Weerribben
Blokzijl, Muggenbeet
The beauty of the Weerribben extends beyond Giethoorn. Get on your bike and discover the adjacent village of Muggenbeet. The village owes its name not to the annoying stinging animals, but to the mücken beecke that runs through Muggenbeet. That is Saxon for 'small stream'. This was very quickly corrupted: already at the beginning of the 14th century it was described as 'Mugghenbete'.
Luckily, you will not find many mosquitoes here, but this nature reserve does contain many birds, butterflies, and dragonflies! Drop-off points such as the bird-watching hut, watchtower or observation platform are perfect points to take a break and spot these birds.
Do not skip Blokzijl either, the city of the Weerribben. At the outdoor center you can learn all about the background of this nature reserve.
During this cycle route you will get to know the Weerribben very well in a short time and you can even take a boat trip along the way.
