Around the year 1400, canal the Scheene was dug out. The Scheene divided the marshland in two. Farmers used the canal to dig down the peat landscape even more, which caused a lot of flooding. From the 19th century, a rule was instituted that the land had to be reclaimed through reclamation, dykes, sluices and mills. Since then, the area has not suffered from floods.
