The current mill was built to replace an older post mill that was used not only for grinding grain, but also for husking barley and rice. The origins of this post mill date back to the founding of the nearby Sint Janskamp convent in 1399. At the time, it was customary for the owner of the mill, who also granted the right to use the wind, to be responsible for the maintenance of the exterior, while the tenant took care of the actual milling.
In 1991, the mill became the property of the municipality of Vollenhove. After various developments, a restoration permit was granted in 1995, which provided an important impetus to shift mass tourism in the Giethoorn region to a more cultural and educational form of recreation. The restoration began in 1995 and was successfully completed in 1997, allowing the mill to retain its historical value and function as a heritage site.
