Anyone passing by the Appelsteeg in Alkmaar should stop at number 2. This is the 'House with the Bullet'. It owes its name to the fact that, during the siege of 1573, the family of Jan Arendsz (who became known as one of the first hage-speakers of the Netherlands) remained unharmed here when a Spanish cannonball hit. One of the surviving municipal accounts of Alkmaar indeed mentions the repair of 'a hole' in his house after a Spanish cannonball had hit it. The bullet is still visible.
