This old grain silo on Oude Winschoterdiep, near Oosterhaven in Groningen, is an old warehouse where barley, wheat and oats were delivered and stored around 1890. After processing, the grains were traded on the Grain Exchange in Groningen. You can still clearly see how this must have worked in this beautiful building. The old silos are still intact.
Today the building is owned by Graansilobier. The beer is not brewed here, that happens about 40 kilometres away. But there is a tasting room and a small shop where you can buy Graansilobier merchandise and their own beers.
Graansilobier was born out of a love for craftsmanship and history. The brewers work with local ingredients and use traditional brewing techniques to create beers full of character. Their range varies from fresh, easy-drinking lagers to fuller-bodied, malty varieties with a deep flavour. Each beer tells a piece of Groningen history and contributes to the revaluation of the city's old grain past. A visit to the tasting room not only offers the chance to sample these beers, but also to experience the atmosphere of the historic warehouse.
