If you want to experience the Land of Leeghwater, you can't skip the Eilandspolder. This unique peatland area was once an island surrounded by the Schermer and Beemster lakes. These were drained in the Golden Age, leaving the Eilandspolder as a green oasis between the reclaimed land.
The landscape consists of a network of ditches, wide canals and small lakes such as De Lei, Arismeer and De Knie. In the spring, countless black-tailed godwits and other meadow birds breed here, while in the winter large groups of common and golden plovers settle here. Quaking bogs, ferns and orchids grow along the water. There is a bird watching hut at the Kerkermeertje, an ideal place to observe the rich bird life up close.
The Eilandspolder is an area that is ideally explored from the water. You can rent a boat here and sail past picturesque villages such as Driehuizen and De Rijp. A beautiful mooring place has been set up on De Lei where you can swim or have a picnic. A perfect place to experience the peace and nature of the Land of Leeghwater.
