On the transition from the higher sandy soils to the stream valleys, in the border region between the Netherlands and Belgium, lies an estate of some 85 hectares named Hollandse Bossen. The estate forms the link between the nature reserves of Chaamse Beek, Chaamse Bossen and Het Merkske.
It is a nature reserve consisting of forests, grasslands, fields and lanes and is still under development. In 2021, the protected pine marten was found in the area during a wildlife observation. They have several burrows in the area, usually in a hollow tree or an abandoned den. The pine marten prefers to live in an old and varied forest. That the animal has been spotted in the Dutch Woodlands is confirmation to foresters of the good quality and variety of their forest.
