The Verdronken Bos near Tull en 't Waal did not always look like this. A beautiful forest used to stand on this spot but the drainage in the area caused some problems. When big rainstorms passed by, the water had difficulty finding its way and often stayed in the same place. Due to this nuisance, it was then decided to set up the forest as a water storage facility.
In case of heavy rain, the piece of land could henceforth be flooded, thus limiting damage and nuisance. The surplus of rainwater caused the trees to partially submerge, causing the treetops to die off and be seen only as stumps above the water line. You can view this special forest via a plank path that runs right through it.
