Cycle route ferry across for a pound of fruit
Buren, Culemborg, Beusichem
The beautiful river area in itself offers a true cycling experience, this route also takes you across the Lek and Amsterdam Rhine Canal by ferry. Taking your bike on one of these ferries and letting it carry you across with flapping hair makes this route just that little bit more fun. Between node 52 and 42, there is the option of taking the ferry across the Lek from Schalkwijk to Culemborg. Between node 96 and 43, there is also a ferry, this time from Wijk bij Duurstede to Beusichem.
But there is more: this route takes you past the attractive orchards of the Betuwe. In spring you can enjoy the beautiful blossoms here, while in summer and autumn you will find an abundance of apples, pears, plums and cherries along the route. Along the road you will see fruit stalls popping up, where you can buy all these delicacies. So make sure you have enough room in your panniers to take along one of those tasty pounds of Betuwe fruit.
Picturesque Buren is also on the route. A visit to Oranjestad Buren is a delight due to its cosy terraces, the presence of historical buildings and the fascinating Museum Buren & Oranje. But the historic centre of Culemborg is also worth stepping off. Every Saturday there is a regional market here on the Varkensmarkt and you'll find the cosiest terraces here too.
Before starting this cycle route, it is advisable to take some cash with you for the ferries and check the sailing times in advance. This way, you will be well prepared and cycle from terrace to terrace without any worries.
