Five chairs made of Breton granite support a large round disc and together form the 'Sun Table'. The chairs are grey granite and the table top red-pink granite. It could be a constellation or a place for contemplation and meeting. Sculptor Joost Barbiers drew inspiration for this 1997 work of art not only from ancient Drenthe, but also from "stone testimonies from all corners of the world and from the earliest times". According to him, these are images that we recognise and, although we often do not fully understand the connection, help us reflect on our own existence.
Sculptor Joost Barbiers (Velsen, 1949 -2015) initially worked mainly with marble and limestone, later increasingly with granite, as with the 'Sun Table'. His studio was in Oudekerk aan de Amstel, near Amsterdam. In the 1990s, he made several sculptures referring to celestial bodies, especially the sun. Another of his well-known works is 'Zeeman', which stands on Kadijksplein in Amsterdam.
