A huge boulder on the Brink in Ees, containing a large carved square hole. The inner walls have been polished completely smooth. The contrast gives a strange sensation. "My sculptures are about the contrast nature - culture, the contrast feeling - intellect or coincidence and calculation," sculptor Gerard Höweler told himself about this work of art. "Boulders are stones formed by a natural weathering process over thousands of years. In the seemingly accidentally formed boulder, I create a contrast by exact intervention. To complete this extreme contrast, I polish the inner form and reveal the structure and colour of the material of the boulder."
Amsterdam sculptor Gerard Höweler (Bandjermasin, Borneo, 1940 - 2021) was a teacher at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam for many years. There are many sculptures by his hand in parks and flowerbeds throughout the Netherlands, including 'Granite Gate' in Heerhugowaard and 'Waterstones' in Utrecht.
