This stainless steel monument to the Merchant Navy is by Wessel Couzijn (Amsterdam 1912-1984). The expressionist artist designed the monument in memory of the 3,500 Dutch sailors who, in World War II, lost their lives on one of the Dutch merchant ships.
Merchant shipping was of great importance to Vlissingen because of its convenient location on the Westerschelde, which made the city a junction of international trade and shipping for centuries. During World War II, merchant shipping played a crucial role in supplying Allied troops, killing over 3,500 Dutch merchant seamen. The Merchant Navy Memorial commemorates their contribution and sacrifices. Although merchant shipping today no longer plays the dominant role it did in the past, Vlissingen remains a relevant maritime city thanks to the presence of ports, shipping services and logistics activities.
