The stone-rich Groninger Jan Evert Scholten donated one hundred and forty hectares of land to the Groningers in 1913 to create a public city park. He hired landscape architect Leonard Springer and director of municipal works Mulock Houwer to transform the land into an impressive natural park in English landscape style. The park was completed in 1926, six years after Jan Evert's death. A large monument to his memory now stands at the end of Concourslaan.
The beautiful landscape park is a great place for people, animals and nature. There is an arboretum, an apiary, a botanical garden and a highlander meadow, where you walk right past the imposing animals. There is room to exercise, to relax and, above all, to enjoy. You can get off for a walk or other activity here, or just stay on your bike and explore the park via the cycle paths that run through it.
