The exact date of the church's construction is not known, but probably took place around the year 1250. Count Otto the Second founded the church and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary, who was joined a few centuries later by St Nicholas as patron saint. After the invasion of the French, the church was assigned to the Protestants, who did not actually use it. It was eventually reassigned to the Catholics in 1809, but the church had then fallen into serious disrepair.
Seven years later, the church could be solemnly consecrated again. The latest restoration made the church what it is today, extremely suitable for celebrations and holding classical concerts.
