Built in 1229 on the orders of Willem I of Egmond, the chapel underwent several restorations over the centuries. In 1573, it suffered heavy damage during the siege of Alkmaar. Geuzen leader Diederik Sonoy feared Spanish occupation of the castle, so he ordered it to be set ablaze.
Restored in 1633 and subsequently renovated, the chapel today offers a charming setting for celebratory events. The stained glass windows were gifted by various cities, nobles, and companies. The turret houses a clock by Christiaan Huygens. The organ, originating from Wirdum in Friesland, was built in 1898 and later fully restored, partly thanks to a generous anonymous donation.
