The tower is as wide as the church itself. This is rare. Both the tower and the church were built in the 15th century, but the tower was renewed in 1742 by Edzard van Sminia. The bells hanging in the tower were made by Thomas Both and Hans Falck.

The church was formerly owned by Saint Remigius, who became bishop of Reims when he was only 18. He is said to have baptized the first king of the Franks, Clovis I, along with some 3,000 warriors during Christmas in the year 496.
