Forestry Odoorn is developing parts of this nature reserve into a semi-open landscape in which heather bushes and junipers are given ample space. Many trees had already been blown down here after a devastating storm in 1972, and more have since been felled to give the heath more space. A few different breeds of sheep graze in the sheep park. The Drenthe Heath Sheep in particular thrives here, as this breed can survive well on the sparse soils. The flock keeps the heath open and healthy. These days, however, the animals graze behind a wolf grid. If you want to see the sheep, you may have to cycle or walk a little deeper into the area via the sandy paths.
