A forest shrew on barely forested Goeree? Yes, that seems an oddity. The creature with the slurpy snout is not too bothered. It is fond of areas with reasonable ground vegetation, even outside the forest. In the rather barren west, there are even proportionately more of them than elsewhere in the country. Something else remarkable is that there is another wood shrew species in the Netherlands: the ‘bicoloured’. It looks like two peas in a pod like our ‘normal’ one, but is not found in the West. To be on the safe side, we look for our wood shrew in a forest, even if it is built. That doesn't matter to our shrew either.
