The interesting stretch of Goeree-Overflakkee between Lighthouse Westhoofd and the village of Stellendam is full of beautiful nature, agricultural landscape and small villages. The island is a paradise for bird lovers. You cycle past the nature reserves Kop van Goeree, Kwade Hoek and the Volgerland. In all these areas, the relationship with water is central. In the whimsical waters, where seawater used to flow, special plants bloom today. It is a region with dunes, woods, dykes, mud flats and creeks. Areas that all attract different bird species.
But there is more to the Kop van Goeree, the floods that have affected Goeree over the centuries have deposited fine sediments like clay and silt soils. This process has contributed to a fertile soil, rich in nutrients, which is very suitable for agriculture. So you can see a rich agricultural culture here. On this route, you will find a number of farm and mill shops, where you can buy the island's produce and learn more about its thriving agricultural sector. So now your panniers will come in handy!
You will also find some surprising sights in this part of the South Holland island. For example, did you know that part of the Atlantik Wall built by the Germans still remains at De Punt? It is worth dismounting here and taking a short walk past the fifteen bunkers that can still be seen here. A little further on, you will also find the RTM Museum, the museum of what was once the main carrier of the South Holland and Zeeland islands. You can even take a ride on an old tram here.
