The original Sint-Petrus basilica dates from 1268. Unfortunately it burned down in 1462, together with all its valuable inventory. Immediately afterwards, a new church was built around the old foundations. This work was halted several times because money ran out. Finally, the current building was completed in 1515. You can see the Kempen Gothic style here: brick combined with tuff and many classic Gothic features. Think of the high pointed arch windows and the colonnades.
Inside, the stained-glass windows and the numerous paintings catch the eye. The church has no less than twenty altars.
