The Munnikkenpolder was reclaimed in the Middle Ages by monks from the nearby Engelendael monastery (1396-1577) and is now a nature and recreation area. The land is mixed with more recent layers, but a few years ago it was decided to make the area suitable for nature and recreation. This was done as compensation for the trees that had to give way due to the widening of the A4 motorway. Nature cannot completely take its course, as the area is regularly mowed to prevent it from becoming swamp forest again.
Now you will find grasslands, ditches and ponds in the polder. Pioneer plants like rape and poppy grow there, which later make way for other species. Birds such as the little ringed plover, black-tailed godwit and sand martin also use the polder to rest and breed. For recreation, you can swim and canoe there in summer. In winter, many birds rest here. The polder is easily accessible via walking and cycling paths, and dogs are welcome if they are on a leash.
