The Poptaslot, also known as Heringastate, has remarkably withstood the test of time. Originally established around 1512 by the Heringa family as a Frisian stronghold, it remains a marvel of historical grandeur today. For a century, the house stayed in the hands of the Heringa family, until it was inherited by the noble Van Eysinga family.
In 1631, the stronghold underwent a significant modernization, giving it its current form. Features such as the sandstone fireplaces and the richly decorated keeftkast (cupboard) reflect the wealth the Van Eysinga family brought to it. A pivotal moment came in 1687 when the estate was sold for the first time. The new owner, Dr. Henricus Popta, a wealthy lawyer from Leeuwarden, used the house solely as a summer residence. However, the exceptional preservation of the estate today is largely thanks to him.
Dr. Popta planned meticulously to ensure his legacy would endure. He not only founded a nearby women’s almshouse but also stipulated in his will measures to safeguard the estate's maintenance. Thanks to his bequest, the Poptaslot is still managed by the four guardians of the Dr. Henricus Popta Almshouse. The prestigious Poptastall in the church is a tangible piece of this rich heritage, still bearing witness to his vision and generosity.
