Cycle route Estate and Castles in Friesland
Marsum, Aldtsjerk, Oentsjerk
Friesland doesn’t have many castles, but you will find beautiful historic houses and impressive estates here, known as "States." This cycling route takes you past several remarkable locations, such as Popta Slot, Dekemastate, Staniastate, and the De Klinze estate. While these buildings might not merit the term "castle" due to the lack of tall towers, battlements, and stone walls, they exude a special charm and allure. Each one tells a story of the past, when wealthy families lived here and left their mark on the surroundings.
Popta Slot in Marsum, also known as Poptastate, is one of the best-preserved townhouses in Friesland. This stately home, built in the 16th century, is surrounded by a moat and features a beautiful garden. Today, it serves as a museum where visitors can experience what life was like back then.
Dekemastate in Jelsum is an impressive estate with a history dating back to the 14th century. The current house, surrounded by a park in the English landscape style, is a paradise for lovers of culture and history. Here, you can walk through the park and enjoy a beautifully restored historic garden, adorned with stunning flowers and plants that enhance its heritage.
The gardens of these locations deserve special attention. Some were designed by the renowned landscape architect Roodbaard, who left a significant mark on Friesland’s landscape in the 19th century. His designs are characterized by winding paths, water features, and natural-looking vegetation, giving the gardens not only a sense of tranquility but also a timeless beauty.
