This huge full beech tree and the small peat-cutter's house below it belong together. Peat cutter Berend Oedszes Weidema built the cottage in 1861.
The story goes that Berend got a small beech tree from his brother and planted it next to the newly built house. The beech is also known as ‘Poppebeam’: poppe is Frisian for baby. According to the stories, the tree is where babies come from. Weidema and his wife wife had as many as seven children from the ‘baby tree’.
The association Plaatselijk Belang Jubbega adopted the tree and took good care of it. It now has a trunk circumference of 540cm. Interrupt your cycle route to admire this giant, the memorial stone informs you about the history of the Poppebeam and the peat house in Jubbega.
