Cycle route in the Frije Wiken
Gorredijk, Jubbega, Nieuwehorne
De Frije Wiken is a beautiful, undiscovered area in south-east Friesland. You will find the special district structure here: the area is intersected by so-called districts, ditches and canals that were dug for peat extraction in the past. After the peat was excavated, nature was given the opportunity to slowly but surely recover. Cycle along old cobblestones, sandy paths and shell paths and enjoy.
Along the way, you will pass through picturesque villages such as Gorredijk and Jubbega, where you almost automatically dismount. These villages feel like a step back in time, with their old farms, atmospheric churches and cosy streets.
Then the route takes you through a varied landscape of woods, heathland, babbling waters and vast meadows. One moment you cycle in the shade of the forest, the next you enjoy the view over the endless fields.
Coming by car? Then you can park at the Walking Park Tjongervallei in Oudehorne.
