Mika van Vonderen (Zeeland N.B. 1970) always wanted a creative profession. When she was not accepted at the art academy, she ended up at the advertising school in Boxtel. Here she learned photography, filming, decorating, window-dressing and painting. She then took a 2nd-degree course in visual arts and ended up working in education. In 2011, freedom beckoned and she started MikaKunst in Haarlem.
In the name of MikaKunst, Mika paints on commission and autonomously focused on technique. In 2021, the residents of Generaal Joubertstraat sought her out. They wanted to make their street cleaner, cosier and greener. There were façade gardens, an insect hotel and a library box. Mika was asked to create a mural. The design came about with the residents and the owner of the neighbouring tattoo shop.
The mural became a Polynesian representation. A hibiscus and signs representing people. The curl represents energy and people chilling and enjoying themselves. Mika is one of the few women responsible for StreetArt in Haarlem. That's why we didn't want to withhold this work from you.
Since August 2023, Mika has changed tack again and moved her MikaKunst to Pombal in Portugal.
