When an Allied plane was shot out of the sky by the enemy, they would try to find a dark, sparsely populated area to defect to with their stricken plane. Such areas could increase the pilot's chance of survival. One such area was De Peel. Dozens of planes crashed in this area, killing many Allied pilots as well. De Peel was therefore also known as 'Death Valley'.
Since 2002, a monument has been placed there to honour the fallen soldiers for the sacrifice they made for freedom.
