A stone's throw from Camp Westerbork, in the village of Grolloo, stands a tangible monument commemorating the liberation in the spring of 1945. Grolloo was liberated by the Canadians on 12 April, just under a month before the whole of the Netherlands was no longer occupied by Germany.
Children from the local school planted a Canadian red beech tree in the middle of the village during the liberation year, in honour of the nationality of the allied soldiers. This liberation tree is still there almost 80 years later, as a memento of this special event. Under the tree is a bottle with the names of the school's students. Meanwhile, the beech tree has become a proud, large tree. It is a symbol of peace in our country, which continues to this day.
