Nature reserve The Heart of Drenthe - Elp
The nature reserve is no less than 4,000 hectares and contains a beautiful mix of woods, fens, heathland and stream valleys. The forest of the 'Heart of Drenthe' is the source area of many Drenthe streams. The water that is naturally retained in this area eventually finds a way, forming streams.
Staatsbosbeheer is committed to returning the 'Heart of Drenthe' to a natural forest landscape. A place where nature can take its own course and where we as humans can experience true wilderness again.
Human encroachments are undone, production forests are cut down to make room for natural and varied forest, and permanent paths are converted to nature trails.
