Nature reserve De Graafschap is a typical Achterhoek landscape between Zutphen, Lochem, Borculo and Doetinchem. This area is known for its so-called coulisse landscape: an alternation of woods, meadows and fields, often bordered by wooded banks and hedges. This is not a Nature reserve that just happened - the landscape was shaped over centuries by farmers and estate owners who lived and worked here.
What makes The County special is the presence of many historic country estates, surrounded by farmland and farmhouses. These country estates brought not only castles and country estates, but also orchards, grain fields and even water mills, which can still be recognised in the landscape.
The variation in landscape makes this area attractive to many animals. You might see a roe deer at dusk or hear a woodpecker in the old oak trees. It is a place where nature and history come together and where you can experience the Achterhoek landscape in all its glory. The characteristic coulisse landscape here is much loved!
