The hill, along with neighbouring hill Bald Mountain, was formed in the penultimate ice age. The foothills of the then glacier pushed up the land, creating a rolling landscape. Its highest point is 35 metres higher than the surrounding surroundings. Unfortunately, watchtower Belvedere is no longer in use. Over the past hundred years, the trees have grown too tall, obstructing the view. Between Lochemse Berg and Kale Berg is the Duivelskolk, a seepage site where groundwater from the soil rises to the surface under pressure.

The trees that eventually die are not cleared by the Geldersch Landschap, as animal life is stimulated thanks to the dead trees. The area is rich in typical Dutch fauna. Woodpeckers, deer, foxes and squirrels have their home there. If you keep an eye out and respect the peace and quiet of the area, you might spot some of them.

On top of the Lochemse Berg, traces of a Schans from probably the 16th or 17th century have been found. At that time, Lochem was besieged and also relieved several times by Spanish troops. The Schans had no active function in this Eighty Years' War, but was probably intended as a training location for the Spaniards. Anno 2024, research into this structure is still ongoing.
