Sion Abbey has stood in Diepenveen since 1890. The monks lived by Benedict's rule: pray and work. They prayed and worked in silence. For example, in the orchard behind the building, with many different fruit varieties. Their own vegetables were grown in the kitchen garden and there was a large professional bookbinding shop. Unfortunately, the orchard was cut down and the farm was leased to neighbours.
It remained a Trappist monastery until 2015, but then the last monks closed the door behind them. They moved to Schiermonnikoog. Now the monastery is managed by Stichting Nieuw Sion. They preserve the religious and cultural heritage so that the peace and quiet remain. At the monastery, prayers are still said four times a day. The kitchen garden can also still be found on the grounds. It grows and blooms abundantly every year!
You can visit the Marian chapel, guest garden, coffee shop and cemetery daily. A shop is located near the gate where you can get souvenirs and tourist information.
