The centuries-old Moermond Castle has its origins in the 13th century, the time of Costijn van Zierikzee.
The current castle, the third in line, was built next to the remains of its predecessors. The first castle, built between 1229 and 1244, left only a few walls as silent witnesses of its glorious past. The second castle, attributed to Aernoud van Haamstede and presumably built before 1339, was largely lost in 1454. Only the imposing gatehouse survived.
In 1513, the current Slot Moermond was erected by Jacob van Serooskerke, converting the old gatehouse into an impressive residential tower. This architectural masterpiece withstood even the destructive force of the 1953 flood disaster, albeit with considerable damage.
After careful restoration, the castle was successively used as a training institute and conference centre. Today, the castle shines in all its glory, serving as an exquisite restaurant and a leading conference centre.
